Embracing Servant Leadership: Lessons from Jesus’ Example

Daily writing prompt
Are you a leader or a follower?

In order to be a leader, you must be a good follower. In this world, we are constantly seeing people flaunting their influence and accomplishments that only serve them. It almost seems like leadership is measured by your success and accomplishments, but it’s completely different in God’s Kingdom.

But among you it will be different. Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, 27and whoever wants to be first among you must become your slave. 28For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mathew 20:26-28

Jesus said out of his mouth that being a leader means you must serve others. This culture tries to teach us to become takers. I realized the girls my age are talking obsessed with being “self-made bosses,” or taking something from a man. It seems that the guys my age are on the same wave. When we understand the spiritual attack we are under, we then understand how every “trend” is an agenda and an attack from the enemy.

Instead of what can I get out of a person or relationship, our heart postures should be “How can I serve you?” We are here to serve and spread the word of God throughout the nations. So, I am leader, but I also am a follower. I am here to serve, less of me and more of Him. I no longer subscribe to what’s trending. I am only interested in what is holy in every aspect of my life. I am okay with losing people that knew the old me and unwilling to accept the knew me. I understand change is hard to accept, but change is necessary. Jesus was the best example of a leader. His name spread across nations without social media. The most famous person in the world, but his character was pure. He was to serve, regardless of His status on this earth.

So, drop the pride that comes with titles given on this earth and serve the people around you. God loves you. He loves the you before the titles, money, recognition, and whatever else you have in this world that makes you great in the eyes of others. Remember, you have a purpose on this earth and it’s not to make a great name for yourself, but to spread and honor His name. Less of you and more of Him. I am not saying success is a sin, but don’t let it be your focus. Make God number one in your life and let Him give you everything you need. God knows the desires of your heart and he wants you to live an abundant life. But we have to be able to be good followers of Christ, so that He can trust us with His people in order to lead and serve them.

Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. Mathew 6:33
